Hair loss, especially in women, is often associated with profound stress. Life events such as divorce, loss of loved ones, loss of employment, and family illness are common causes. And then there is peri-menopause and menopause; kicking in hormone reductions that can cause metabolic stress, such as the liver/gallbladder compromise discussed in part 1. The liver isn’t the only organ affected by stress and/or menopause. The Adrenal Glands, your stress handlers, are not only   primary responders to all types of stress. When menopause hits, they get another job! They take over Progesterone production as the ovaries shut down. Whoa!

Adrenals Nutrition

Stress, Adrenals and Hair Loss

The adrenal glands are walnut sized glands that sit on top of your kidneys. Their primary function is to respond to stress as directed by the Hypothalamus & Pituitary glands (HP Axis), which we will talk about more next time.

When you are stressed, your Sympathetic Nerve Pathway aka “Fight-Flight” System is activated. When your HP axis sends a stress signal your Adrenals Glands secrete Epinephrine and Nor-epinephrine (adrenalin), followed by another hormone, Cortisol, which acts to release stored sugar from the liver into the blood.

If this happens occasionally; no problem. However, if your panic button is getting pushed over and over again, problems start to brew.

When you are under profound, prolonged stress, your body must make some tough choices regarding priorities: Reproduce or Survive.
Obviously, survival trumps reproduction. So, instead of allocating nutrients and production time for sex hormones and hair, the body prioritizes the production of stress hormones made by the adrenals: Away goes your libido and your hair!

Supporting Adrenal Glands during and after times of stress is wise.
At Chico Creek Wellness, we stock glandular, herbal, and specific whole food vitamins designed for Adrenal Support. We also counsel you on what foods to eat and avoid to help your adrenals.

Don’t wait for your hair to fall out!
If your hair is already thinning, action is overdue!

Peri-menopause tends to begin in the mid-30’s and involves a natural decrease in the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone tends to decrease about 120 times faster than estrogen, so as a woman proceeds towards menopause, she becomes more and more estrogen dominant.

Estrogens bind with bile, produced by the liver. Bile is supposed to be thin like water. Combined with estrogen, it becomes thicker, even sludgy, causing liver and gall-bladder congestion. This is why so many women lose their gall-bladders, especially in their 40’s. One of bile’s primary functions is to act like a detergent on fats; reducing them to tiny little, absorbable bubbles called “micelles”.  These fats are then transported to the tissues, including the skin and scalp. When your liver is congested with excess estrogens, important fatty acids necessary for skin and hair integrity don’t make it out.  Since minerals travel around with fats, this means your minerals aren’t getting where they need to go, either.

Dry skin, thinning hair, and weak fingernails are important signs of   excessive estrogen dominance and liver/gall-bladder congestion.

The first, important step towards reversing hair loss is detoxing the liver and gall-bladder, thereby improving hormone balance and nutrient delivery.

At Chico Creek Wellness, we have easy, rewarding Detox Programs that accomplish liver detox very effectively. One of the first thing many women notice is that their skin gets soft and velvety! Healthier skin and scalp means healthier hair, not to mention more energy, more stable emotions, and a happier you!

Spring is a great time to detox! Give us a call to get started on your own “YOU-TURN”!
It’s much easier than you think.

Next week we’ll talk about the role of the adrenals (your stress handlers) in hair loss and regrowth.

My office manager, Angela, and I have been busy learning new methods of Science Based Nutrition analysis. Our journey started in February with a 12 hour informational seminar and has been continuing ever since.

By joining a doctor’s collective, I am now able to offer nutrition targeted blood testing through Quest or Lab Corp at very reasonable prices. (ie $250. instead of $1,500.!)

I am also now offering hair analysis to assess heavy metal toxicity and mineral deficiencies. Additionally, I now have basic urinalysis in the office. (The very first patient I tested had an undiagnosed urinary tract infection. No wonder she was so tired!)

Once the lab information is collected, it is put together in a comprehensive, Science Based Nutrition report that explains and correlates all the findings, along with a discussion of what nutritional supplements are appropriate and why. Very cool!!

I am enjoying the challenge of implementing this new informational layer and putting Science Based Nutrition to work.

Of course, with every new system comes a learning curve and this one is no exception. Angela and I are grappling with new software, printing & collating reports, as well as an informational surge.

We would like to invite you be a part of our learning curve while we work out the bugs!

Learning Curve Special through May 31, 2017

Science Based Nutrition Blood, Hair, and Urinalysis with Initial Consult and Report of Findings:
$375.00 (usually $635)

Call us now and take advantage of this special offer associated with our Learning Curve! (530) 342-8464.

Happy Easter, Everyone!

Eggs still Warm

My chickens have determined that Spring is as good as here and egg laying has commenced after a short winter break. They have been busy these winter months; tilling the garden, making pine needle hummocks all over my yard, and mining the floor of the barn for hay seed.
I made an omelette from their eggs last week and it was practically neon orange from all the carotenoids.

Research indicates that regular egg consumption improves brain health, decreases risk of stroke by 12%, and is good for your eyes!

The old myth about eggs driving up cholesterol and causing heart disease is just that…a myth. No research supports such claims, in fact, quite the opposite.

So, Happy Spring and Eat Your Eggs!! (2-4/day is just fine!)

Estrogen Dominance and hypothyroid are very common, both in young and older women, but is most likely to occur in the post-menopausal woman, who is highly susceptible due to the drop off of progesterone that accompanies menopause. Since estrogen blocks thyroid hormone from entering the cells, excess estrogen in your blood and liver can cause all kinds of problems, including hypothyroid symptoms,..even if your thyroid is working just fine!

Here are 12 signs that might indicate that excess estrogen is effecting your thyroid function:

1. Fatigue!hypothyroid
2. Constipation
3. Temperature Sensitivity
4. Weight Gain
5. Dry Skin
6. Depression/Anxiety
7. Brain Fog
8. High Cholesterol
9. Rosacea
10. Heavy Periods
11. Puffy Eyes/Face
12. Breast Tenderness

The Fix?

Firstly, Optimize Nutrition by eliminating foods that drive estrogen production and weight gain.

Secondly, Flush the Liver with a good month long program. Amazing! Your liver cannot process hormones or efficiently do any of it’s 500+ functions if it is clogged with fat, hormones, and toxins.

Thirdly, Optimize Digestion and the Health of the Micro-Biome. As research on Pro and Pre -Biotics continues to accumulate,  good liver function is high on the list of things the health of your Micro-Biome determines.

Woman-Lifting-WeightLiver Detox, Digestion Optimization, and Micro-Biome Support are smack dab in the middle of our wheel-house here.

Allergies

Seasonal Stresses

Itchy eyes, clogged sinuses, head-aches, as well as neck and other body pains are all common symptoms of allergies.

1) Wash your face and hands a few times a day, especially after being outside. Pollen collects on the eye-brows, lashes,…everywhere!

2) Give your body natural allergy support that helps your body’s allergy management system work better!

Standard Process ALLERPLEX  (available at the office) supports the liver, kidneys, and lungs as they process pollen instead of shutting down the histamine pathway like anti-histamines do. Most patients report it works better without the side effects! Colloidal Silver Nasal Spray (also available at the office) opens the sinus airways and prevents bad things from growing in there!

3) Chiropractic adjustments can help a great deal by relieving pressure and improving sinus and lymphatic drainage.

4) Diet makes a huge difference! Try avoiding processed foods, dairy, and sugar (including grain and fruit) for a month to check it out.

Happy Breathing!

As many of you know, I am leaving tomorrow for Cuba where I will be salsa dancing my feet off for two weeks! Yesterday afternoon I realized I was having that awfulgroup-dance-lessons-santiago-de-cuba-616x462 a little bit of a sore throat, swollen lymph glands, dull head-ache, and general fatigue. We’ve seen a LOT of sick people the last few days!
When you have such symptoms, you have about a 6 hour window to fire up your immune system and dodge the flu bullet.

Here’s what I did:
First of all, I made sure I didn’t eat any sugar. Even a teaspoon of sugar compromises your immune system for at least 48 hours.
Then I started the following regimen every 4 hours:

  1. Echinacea Premium Tincture – 5 mls
  2. Standard Process Congaplex- 6 capsules
  3. SP Cataplex D (or  Fermented Cod Liver Oil)- 4 tablets/capsules
  4. SP Cataplex E- 4 tablets
  5. Plenty of Hot Herbal Tea. My personal choice yesterday was Tulsi/Holy Basil with Ginger (a very sweet Christmas present from my office manager, Angela)

This morning I woke up feeling well. My sore throat is gone, the lymph swelling is down, I have no aches or pains, and plenty of energy!

This protocol REALLY works!!

For those of you wishing to “dodge the crud” this holiday season, please know that Angela will be manning the office while I am gone (although she will be taking a few days off after New Years) so you can stop by and stock up on amazing immune support ideally before the cold/flu bug knocks on your door.

Happy Holidays to All!!

I’ve had a lot of patients commenting about their inclination to eat more as winter approaches, too; it’s natural!

If you do need to  put on weight for the winter, focus on healthy carbs like yams and sweet potatoes.  Be sure to put plenty of butter on them, which is necessary to trigger the bile production needed to break down their long-chain carbohydrates and avoid bloating.

If you don’t need more body fat, focus on healthy fats like nuts, avocadoes, and fatty meats. Watch out for the carbs though, they are the real fat-makers in the equation.

As winter and the holidays approach, we wish you many happy meals!

Last weekend, Angela (office manager) and I journeyed to standard process in Alameda for a 12 hour seminar on “Nutritional Solutions for an Adrenal Fatigued World”.
Adrenal Fatigue

Seminar at Standard process

My greatest passion is learning to problem solve and then playing it sp-seminarforward with my patients. Adrenal Fatigue is not a new topic, but it is a complex one!  Developing an ever deeper knowledge of how endocrine physiology works, as well as how to assess and treat Adrenal Fatigue more effectively gives me goose bumps!

The Adrenal Glands are your “Stress Handlers”. They handle whatever stress comes; blood sugar fluctuations, temperature changes, emotional challenges, bad air quality, worries about the future, regrets about the past, the list is long.

Needless to say, in our crazy world, most people’s adrenal glands are over-worked!
The effects of Adrenal Fatigue include:
Immune compromise ( sick a lot?)
Digestive and respiratory troubles as the delicate tissues of those systems start to break down (asthma, allergies, bronchitis, ulcers, colitis, etc) , Thyroid problems (including Hashimotos’s).
Brain disturbance (anxiety/depression, anger, brain fog, overwhelm) and on and on…

The good news is that there is a LOT you can do to support and stabilize your adrenal glands, thereby improving your health and life experience.

With Knowledge, Experience, a Whole Food Medicine Pharmacy, Liquid Herbal Formulations, Food Plans, and Compassion, we are here to help.
